Angiolini secures double gold in Taranto
Italian Lisa Angiolini won the 50m breaststroke at the Mediterranean Games to claim her second title alongside her 200m breaststroke victory.
Lisa Angiolini has secured a second gold medal at the Mediterranean Games by winning the 50m breaststroke in Taranto. The Italian swimmer followed up on her previous victory in the 200m breaststroke while also earning a silver medal in the 100m event.
Angiolini set the tone early during the preliminary rounds where she clocked a championship-record time of 30.45. Returning to the pool for the evening final, she claimed the gold with a time of 30.64. This result allowed for an Italian sweep of the top three spots on the podium, as Ana Rodrigues took second in 31.01 and Irene Mati finished with the bronze in 31.34.
In the men's 50m breaststroke, Emre Sakci managed a narrow victory by a margin of just 0.02 seconds over Gabriele Mancini. Sakci finished in 27.24, while Mancini followed at 27.26. Nusrat Allahverdi rounded out the podium in 27.39 for a Türkiye 1-3 finish.
Alberto Razzetti showed dominance in the 400m individual medley. The European Championships silver medalist pulled away during the second half of the race to finish in at 4:11.99. He was more than six seconds clear of his nearest rival, Greece's Daniil Giourtzidis, who touched 4:18.28.
The 100m freestyle saw Toni Drajoja overtake the leader Lorenzo Ballarati on the second 50 meters to win in 48.77. Vili Sevic moved from fourth place to secure silver with a time of 49.19, while Andreas Vazaios took the third spot in 49.37. In the women's 100m freestyle, Kalia Antoniou took gold in 54.60, narrowly ahead of Chiara Tarantino who recorded 54.67.
The 800m freestyle was a highly competitive race where the lead changed hands three times in the final 150 meters. Artemis Vasilakis led until the 650m mark before Francesca Martins took control. Ultimately, the top three women were separated by only 0.68 seconds.
Noemi Cesarano completed a distance double by winning the 800m freestyle. She took the lead during the penultimate 50 meters to finish in 8:29.65. Vasiliki Vasilakis and Francesca Martins took the silver and bronze with times of 8:30.02 and 8:30.33 respectively.
