Sophomore Watson Nguyen and junior Peter Whittington represented the University of Pennsylvania at last week's NCAA Division I men's swimming and diving championships. In their national championship debuts, Nguyen finished 28th in the 100-yard breaststroke and 26th in the 200-yard breaststroke, while Whittington placed 23rd in the 200 breaststroke and 31st in the 400-yard individual medley.

They are the first Quakers not named Matt Fallon to swim at the championships since 2019. This year also marked the first time since 2016 that multiple Penn swimmers competed at the national meet.

Qualification Path

Nguyen qualified automatically by sweeping the breaststroke events at the 2026 Ivy League championships. Whittington earned his berth with a runner-up time in the 200 breaststroke at the same conference meet. Both swimmers had narrowly missed qualification the previous year.

"[Peter and I] train very hard, and we're at it every single day," Nguyen told reporters Pennsylvanian. "We're going to do our best to have a better result next year and represent Penn way better next year."

The duo upheld Penn's recent strength in breaststroke, a discipline dominated for the past four NCAA championships by the now-graduated Matt Fallon.

The National Stage

Training for the meet presented a challenge, occurring with a smaller group during spring break with a tight turnaround to taper. Nguyen, however, valued the focused atmosphere of the NCAA training group, which included women's team All-Americans.

He found the championship environment uniquely intense. "It's the most elite people from the top, these top state schools like Texas, Cal, Florida, and there's so much energy because all the parents are coming out," Nguyen said. He called it the highest-energy meet he has attended, despite previous experience at junior world championships and the U.S. Open.

Nguyen attributed his performances, which were off the times he set at Ivies, to the pressure of the big stage.

Future Olympic Ambitions

Looking ahead, both swimmers are targeting the long course season and longer-term Olympic dreams. Whittington, originally from Hong Kong, has previously represented China at the World Junior Championships.

Nguyen, who grew up in Texas, recently acquired dual U.S.-Vietnamese citizenship. He is exploring the possibility of representing Vietnam in international competition, including the Olympics, noting the extreme competitiveness of the U.S. Olympic team.

"I'm going to go to some meets in Vietnam and to see how I enjoy the experience," Nguyen stated, framing the decision as one of personal authenticity. Their path mirrors other Ivy League swimmers, such as former Penn swimmer Keanan Dols, who represented Jamaica at the 2021 Olympics.
