Van Mathias Sets American Records in 50 and 100 Breaststroke
Van Mathias returned to competition in 2025 after a two-year hiatus and went on to break American records in both the 50-meter and 100-meter breaststroke

Van Mathias broke the American record in the 50-meter breaststroke with a time of 26.30 seconds.
He had previously improved from 26.76 to 26.57, then to 26.39 before reaching the record.
In the 100-meter breaststroke, Mathias lowered his time from 59.74 to 59.45, then to 58.19 before setting the American record at 58.01 seconds.

He contributed to gold-medal finishes in both U.S. Medley relays, including the mixed 4×100 medley that set a world record.
Beyond his breaststroke achievements, Mathias has recorded 21.62 seconds in the 50-meter freestyle and 22.84 seconds in the 50-meter butterfly.
These times have prompted discussion about whether his earlier training focused on the wrong events or methods.

He placed second in the 100-meter breaststroke at that event in 59.74 seconds.
These results earned him a spot back on the U.S. National Team.
Over the following year, he continued to improve his breaststroke times.
His progression in the 50-meter breaststroke went from 26.76 to 26.57, then 26.39, and finally 26.30.
In the 100-meter breaststroke, he advanced from 59.74 to 59.45, then 58.19, and ultimately 58.01.
At Pan Pacs 2026, his 58.02 in the 100-meter breaststroke secured gold.
His 26.42 in the 50-meter breaststroke earned silver.
The 22.84 in the 50-meter butterfly was noted as a personal best.
