The Southeastern Conference (SEC) has released a new seven-day format for its 2027 Swimming & Diving Championships. The meet will be held from February 14 to 20 at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin, Texas.

This change stretches the championship from its previous six-day length. The new schedule separates diving and swimming into distinct blocks, a structure the SEC says could reduce the time athletes miss from school.

A Separated Schedule

Diving events will now run from Sunday through Wednesday, covering the first four days of the meet. Swimming events will follow, occupying Thursday through Saturday. This reduces the overlap between the two sports from six days to just two.

Previously, both swimmers and divers had five days of competition. Under the 2027 format, divers will compete for four days and swimmers for five. The SEC stated it does not have estimated session timelines, as the new format's impact on entries is uncertain.

Comparison to Previous Format

The core swimming schedule remains similar but is shifted back by one day. The SEC's format already moves at a quicker pace than other dual-gender conferences due to fewer events per night. The conference hopes the change will shorten the duration of the prime-time swimming sessions on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

A comparison of the key dates is shown below:

Championship YearMeet DatesFormat Duration
2026Tuesday - Saturday5 days
2027Monday - Saturday7 days (total)

It is unclear if there will be a break in the schedule where diving events were previously intermingled.

Broader Context and Interest

This experiment will be closely watched by NCAA coaches. One leading proposal for making the NCAA Championships more television-friendly has been to move diving to the start of the meet. The SEC's new format is not an exact match for that idea but significantly reduces overlap.

While streaming data for conference championships is not public, SwimSwam's traffic data indicates the SEC Championship consistently generates the most public interest. The University of Texas men won the 2026 men's title, edging out Florida and Tennessee. The Texas women dominated the 2026 women's competition, finishing ahead of Tennessee and Florida.
