Kate Douglass has been selected as the Ultra Swimmer of the Month by SwimSwam. The University of Virginia star delivered a series of historic performances for the U.S. team at the 2026 Pan Pacific Championships in August.

Her month began at the U.S. National Championships. On August 1, Douglass clocked a 51.93 in the 100-meter freestyle during a time trial. That time ranked her fourth all-time and came within five-hundredths of a second of training partner Anna Moesch's American Record of 51.88.

Pan Pacs Dominance

Two weeks later, Douglass took on a massive program at the Pan Pacific Championships. She raced four individual events and three relays. Her meet started strongly with a silver medal in the women's 50-meter butterfly. She finished in 25.06 seconds, behind teammate Gretchen Walsh. In the prelims, Douglass had become just the third woman in history to break the 25-second barrier with a 24.99.

On the first night, she delivered a stunning 51.01-second anchor leg on the mixed 4x100-meter medley relay. That split helped the American team win gold and set a new world record of 3:36.70.

Record-Breaking Freestyle

After a fourth-place finish in the 100-meter breaststroke on day two, Douglass bounced back powerfully. On day three, she led off the U.S. women's 4x100-meter freestyle relay in 51.69 seconds. That swim broke Anna Moesch's American Record and missed the world record, held by Marrit Steenbergen, by just one-hundredth of a second. It made Douglass the second-fastest performer in history for the event.

The final day of competition was historic. Douglass faced prelims in the 50-meter freestyle and 200-meter breaststroke, followed by finals in both events plus the women's medley relay that evening.

She set a new world record of 23.49 in the 50-meter freestyle prelims, breaking Gretchen Walsh's previous mark. In the final, she was even faster. Douglass clocked 23.19 to win gold, slashing three-tenths off her newly set record.

According to SwimSwam, her 23.19 put her 0.36 seconds ahead of the next-fastest performer, Gretchen Walsh. This margin, equivalent to 1.53%, makes it one of the most dominant world records ever set.

Versatile Finale

About twenty minutes after the 50 free final, Douglass was back in the pool for the 200-meter breaststroke. She claimed a silver medal with a time of 2:22.57.

Racing for the third time in 90 minutes, she closed her program by anchoring the U.S. women's 4x100-meter medley relay. Douglass split 52.23 on the freestyle leg as the team won gold by over four and a half seconds. Their time of 3:50.43 set a new Championship Record.

On the Tuesday following the meet, USA Swimming named Douglass to the 2026-27 U.S. National Team in six different events. This selection highlights her incredible versatility across multiple strokes and distances. The Ultra Swimmer of the Month feature is a subjective recognition by SwimSwam meant to highlight one U.S.-based athlete's noteworthy work over the past month.
