Junior Nationals finalist Dmitriy Oranskiy will swim for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The high school senior announced his verbal commitment to join the Tarheels in the fall of 2027.

In a statement, Oranskiy expressed gratitude. "I'm incredibly excited and grateful to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of North Carolina," he said. He thanked his family, teammates, and coaches, including UNC's Mark and Andrew for welcoming him.

Oranskiy is a senior at De La Salle High School in California and trains year-round with the Pleasanton Seahawks. He primarily focuses on freestyle events.

Recent Championship Performances

Oranskiy delivered a string of personal bests at the Winter Junior Championships - West last December. He raced the 100, 200, 500, and 1650-yard freestyle, setting lifetime bests in all but the mile. He also set new personal records in the 50 and 100 backstroke while leading off relays.

A week later at the Walnut Sectionals, he lowered some of those times again. He placed 11th in the 500 free and 20th in the 100 free with another personal best.

His momentum continued into the long course season. At the 2026 Junior National Championships in August, Oranskiy clocked lifetime bests in five events and earned a second swim in one. He finished 19th in the 200-meter freestyle.

Best Times and Team Projections

The swimmer's current best short course yard times are as follows:

EventTime
100 Free45.35
200 Free1:37.70
500 Free4:28.28
1000 Free9:19.05
1650 Free15:34.74

Based on last season's roster, Oranskiy's times would have placed him within the UNC team's top ten in his primary events. He would have ranked third in the 1650 free, fourth in the 1000 free, and fifth in the 500 free. He would have been ninth in the 200 free and tenth in the 100 free.

ACC Competitive Landscape

The University of North Carolina is a Division I program that competes in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The men's team placed eighth out of fifteen teams at the 2026 ACC Championships. They sent five athletes to the subsequent NCAA Division I Men's Championship, finishing 19th overall.

The time standards required to earn a second swim at the 2026 ACC Championships were 42.67 in the 100 free, 1:34.69 in the 200 free, and 4:20.07 in the 500 free. Oranskiy's current bests place him outside those cutoffs.

Oranskiy has another full season of high school and club swimming before he arrives on campus. His eventual placement on the Tarheels' roster will become clearer after that development. He is set to join a recruiting class that includes Jack Martin, Issac Adanin, and Hampton Stuecker.
