C.J. Moran Named Head Coach for SCSU Swimming & Diving
Southern Connecticut State University has appointed alumnus and longtime assistant C.J. Moran as the new head coach for its men's and women's swimming and diving programs, succeeding the late Tim Quill.

Southern Connecticut State University Director of Athletics Terrance Jones has announced C.J. Moran as the new Head Coach for the SCSU men's and women's swimming and diving programs.
A four-year letterwinner for Southern Connecticut from 1995 to 1999, Moran is deeply familiar with the program. He is currently in his third stint on the coaching staff, having previously served as an assistant coach from 2000 to 2001 and again from 2002 to 2005 before returning most recently in an assistant capacity. During his tenure, the Owls have secured 35 combined Northeast 10 Conference Championships.
A Program Pillar Takes the Helm
Director of Athletics Terrance Jones expressed strong confidence in the appointment. "There is no one more prepared, or more deserving, to lead our swimming & diving family forward than C.J. Moran," said Jones. He highlighted Moran's long history with the university as a student-athlete, alumnus, and coach, noting he embodies the program's values.
Moran swam for SCSU under coaches Hutchinson, Wise, and Quill, helping to establish the Owls as the premier program in the NE10. As an assistant, he coached numerous conference champions, All-Americans, and NCAA qualifiers.
Moran's Vision and Gratitude
In response to his appointment, Moran shared his profound gratitude. "I am extremely honored to be chosen as the next head coach of the Southern Swimming and Diving Program," Moran said. He thanked his family, friends, the athletic administration, current team members, and alumni for their support throughout the process.
Moran holds a bachelor's degree in social work from Southern Connecticut State University. He expressed enthusiasm for continuing to work with the student-athletes. "I am excited for the opportunity to continue to work with our student athletes and to further pursue the tradition of excellence of SCSU Swimming and Diving that was set forth by my predecessors," he stated.
Succeeding a Legend After a Emotional Season
The coaching change follows a historically emotional 2025-26 season. Legendary head coach Tim Quill passed away suddenly on February 10, 2026, just two days before the NE10 Championships. In a tribute dubbed a "Win for Tim," the women's team went on to capture its sixth consecutive and 18th overall NE10 title. Quill, in his 27th season, had built one of the most successful programs in SCSU and NE10 history, earning 17 men's and 18 women's conference titles.
Moran will assume his head coaching duties immediately. He will lead both programs into the upcoming 2026-27 season. The SCSU swimming and diving program is the most decorated in Northeast-10 Conference history, competing at the James Moore Field House Pool in New Haven, Connecticut.
