Angharad Evans won seven medals last summer. The breaststroke specialist claimed double individual gold at the Commonwealth Games and added a gold and a silver at the European Championships.

Her journey to the top of the sport was not straightforward. Evans detailed her path in a recent interview on the SwimSwam Podcast.

A Challenging NCAA Chapter

In 2021, 18-year-old Angharad Evans moved from Scotland to train and study at the University of Georgia. She had not visited the campus beforehand. The high-yardage program did not suit her. Evans also failed to build strong connections with the coaching staff.

She left the swim team after her freshman season. Evans stopped swimming entirely but remained in Athens to attend classes. Without the structure of the sport, she struggled. She returned to Scotland in December 2022.

The Stirling Comeback

Evans slowly returned to the water the following winter. She trained with her home club through the spring of 2023 and competed at the British trials that April. This process led her to commit to swimming again.

She joined the University of Stirling under coach Ben Higson. The fit was strong and marked the start of her resurgence. In 2024, she qualified for her first Olympic Games, reaching the 100-meter breaststroke final in Paris. She also made the 200-meter breaststroke final at the 2024 World Championships in Singapore.

Handling Major Championship Pressure

After posting personal best times at the British Trials this April, Evans felt immense pressure heading into a home Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. She won gold in both the 100 and 200-meter breaststroke events. Her times, however, were slower than her recent bests.

She consciously changed her mindset for the European Championships in Paris. Evans focused solely on her own execution rather than the outcome of the race. The shift worked. She swam faster times, won gold in the 100-meter breaststroke, and took silver in the 200-meter event.

The following table summarizes Angharad Evans's major individual medal results from the summer of 2024.

Evans reflected on the learning experience from the 2024 World Championships as she looks ahead. Her story is one of overcoming a failed move, a break from the sport, and subsequent self-imposed pressure to ascend to the global podium.
