Building a program from scratch can be both an exciting and scary endeavor, but for Jason Bowes, the challenge is an opportunity to create something special.

New Era for IMG Academy Swimming

After nearly 20 years as Head Coach/Director of Operations at Tampa Bay Aquatics, Bowes has been named the first ever head coach for IMG's high school and middle school swimming and diving program. The program will begin competition in the fall of 2027, once a brand new 9,345-square foot natatorium on campus is finished being built.

Building a Program from Scratch

Bowes is aware of the advantages of starting a program from scratch at IMG Academy. "Walking around IMG Academy, you can't help but be motivated by what surrounds you every day," he said. "There is an incredible amount of knowledge, experience and resources and energy already here." The new program will have the opportunity to build a culture and identity from the ground up, with Bowes prioritizing the recruitment of assistants who share his vision.

A Holistic Education Model

IMG Academy has a holistic education model that mixes an academic curriculum with athletic training and coaching for students in grades 6-12, as well as post-graduate students. The campus features on-site dormitories for out-of-state and international students and offers an extensive slate of sports camps. With a popular destination for young athletes around the world, recruiting quality swimmers to IMG shouldn't be much of an issue for Bowes and his staff.

Development and Success

The big key for Bowes and his staff will be development and getting the best out of each swimmer. "What I've really enjoyed seeing is how invested everyone seems to be in what we're building," he said. "There are a lot of moving parts, and everywhere I turn there are people willing to share their expertise, contribute ideas and help us figure out how to make swimming successful." With a brand new natatorium and a team of dedicated coaches, Bowes is confident that the program will be successful.

Establishing a Culture

Bowes wants coaches who believe in his philosophy of "person first, athlete second, swimmer third." This approach prioritizes the development of the individual athlete, with the ultimate goal of creating a better swimmer. "We need coaches who are excited by high expectations, want to collaborate and genuinely want to be part of building something special," he said. With a strong team of coaches and a supportive community, Bowes is confident that the program will thrive.
